It is the most recent episode that thick fog covers Lahore , blocking out the winter sunshine, closing off the motorway after dusk and preventing flights from landing at the international airport at night. Residents of Lahore, are facing a dense blanket of smog that has reduced visibility for commuters and been responsible for several respiratory and mental illnesses. The problem has grown worse over the last five years due to the high levels of pollution and poor air quality in the city, created by increasing vehicular, industrial emissions, coal-based power plants, and burning of agriculture waste. To break it down, smog is a mixture of different pollutants, including oxides of nitrogen (NOx), oxides of Sulphur (SOx), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and the ozone. The main pollutant responsible for smog built up is NOx. Historically, the most lethal smog was the London’s Great Smog in 1952, when more than 12,000 deaths were repor...

Nearly half of endangered mammals and a quarter of birds are already harmed by climate change—a much bigger segment than previously thought, researchers have found.Endangered primates and elephants are among the groups squeezed hardest by global warming, partly because they reproduce slowly and thus take longer to adapt to rapid environmental changes, they reported. While most studies seek to predict global warming’s future impact on animal survival, the new analysis found that for “large numbers” of threatened species, the damage was already being done. The data suggests that “the impact of climate change on mammals and birds in the recent past is currently greatly under-appreciated,” said a study in the journal Nature Climate Change this week.According to co-author James Watson of the Wildlife Conservation Society, “something significant needs to happen now to stop species going extinct.”“Climate change is not a future threat anymore,” he added....

The term global warming means increase in greenhouse effect . The greenhouse effect is a natural process by which the earth holds some of the energy of sunrays, and utilizes it to warm it enough to sustain life on it. The human activities like burning of fossil fuels, excessive smoke discharges from factories and the depletion of forests have led to an increase in the concentration of the greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, in the earth’s outer atmosphere which are responsible for trapping excessive heat inside the environment and thus increasing the overall temperature of the earth, leading to the phenomenon of global warming . Global warming has emerged as one of the major threats to our planet in this century. It has been proved that due to the increase of the greenhouse gases in our outer atmosphere, the earth’s temperature has warmed by 0.74°C over the last 100 years, leading to floods, famines, droughts and cy...

Pakistan is one of the worst affected countries from climate change. The Economic Survey of Pakistan released by the federal government states that the three biggest challenges pertaining to climate change faced by the country in coming years will be related to water, food and energy security.“Pakistan is continuously suffering with extreme weather events due to changing climate that include seasonal prolonged droughts, heavy monsoon rains, devastating floods, monsoonal storms, cyclones, unusual fogs, melting of glaciers, landslides and avalanches.”Despite all these challenges, according to the survey, the good news is that the existing and proposed measures being taken by the government would help the country to address issues effectively. “Despite having high vulnerability to climatic changes in future, Pakistan is still among very low green house gas (GHG) emiting countries, however, being a responsible state and part of the international community, Pakistan is planning to ...
Rising temperatures threaten Pakistan’s food security efforts

“ Global Warming induced by rising temperatures can badly affect Pakistan’s food production system in the shape of crop yield losses and reduced growing cycles in various climatic zones of the country,” said climate change ministry spokesperson Mohammad Saleem. He said like most developing countries, Pakistan was staring at certain food insecurity with its food production out of sync with the population growth. Food availability is further threatened by shifting weather patterns with recurring severe droughts and floods that affected the country’s overall crop production. The spokesperson explained that studies carried out by the Global Change Impact Study Centre (GCISC), the ministry’s research wing, pointed to an average temperature increase over Pakistan in the coming decades at a pace faster than that of the average global temperature increase. “The temperature rise in Pakistan may exceed by about one degree Celsius by the end of this century,” Mr Saleem cautioned, quoti...

CLIMATE change is a serious global threat and Pakistan has been ranked eighth on the list of countries most vulnerable to climate change by the German watch Global Climate Risk Index. According to a UK-based global risk consulting firm, Verisk Maplecroft, three cities of Pakistan are considered at high risk from climate change that includes Lahore, Faisalabad and Karachi. In a recent global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions study from 2011-2015, Pakistan has been ranked 137th and has contributed only 0.47 percent of global GHG emissions, but owing to its climatic conditions it is consistently bracketed with countries that have drastic climate change effects. Pakistan is considered among countries that suffer extreme weather conditions. Pakistan was one of five nations that were badly affected by the climate change in 2014. The Pakistan Economic Survey has reported that during 2010-2012 floods more than 3,000 people were killed and resulted in loss of $16 billion. Thousands of peopl...
