How
to take building footprints in Google Earth?
ii. How to convert a KML into shape file?
In this tutorial the whole process would be done step by step. The
footprints are taking on Google Earth in KML format and the shape file make in
ArcMap, so considering the following.
If you did not install the Google Earth and ArcGIS please first install
them.
1. Start the Google Earth on your computer.
2. It displays like this on your
computer screen.
If you know latitude and
longitude coordinates the desired location,i.e; I want to search the Rawalpindi
Saddar Flashmen’s Terminal and Ihave the Coordinates(GPS points) 33 35’ 33.58”
N ; 73 03’ 18.10” then enter them in the searh space bar and click search it goes
the exat location of the earth surface.

Enter the
coordinates and click on search button.you can see the red encircle lines of
exact location of Rawalpindi Saddar
Flashmen’s Terminal
And if you don’t have the coordinates then simple type the name of
the loaction in search space bar,it goes the exact location on the earth
surface.

Just enter the
name in the search bar space and click search buton.you can see the desired
lloaction.
In the above both cases you can see the same
earthe surface results.which the process you feel convienent for you follow it, but I prefer
second, because just enter the name of desired location and find it easily.
So the actula concern is
buildind footpring.

In the Menu bar click on the Add button, it
display the options, and click on Polygon.
6.
When cilck on the
polygon the Google Earth New polygon window open,then Name

the
polygon.i.e,Name….1.
If you want to make more then 1 poygon
then the best way is to create a Folder in Places and making polygon as more as.

Then click on
Style , Color in the Google Earth New polygon so chose the color for the
polygon

In the color option
cilck on outline.and don’t click OK or Cancel button.

So please Zoom
out the Google Earth display map and make footprint/polygon of a building.

Then click OK button and the footprint of the building
made.
Similarly you have created
several footprints of the buildings i.e,
These are the footprints of
the buildings.And now need to make a shape file of these footprints.

Right click on the made polygon or folder in the
Places, and click on Save Place As…

Then save it in the KML format and click OK.

Now open the ArcMap and click on Add Data button

The diloge box
open as Connect to folder.or drag drop the KML in ArcMap.

And then Add the KML file in ArcMap.

The KML loaded in ArcMap and it contains many
other files in the TOC.

So except the footprint select and Remove all
the other files in TOC.

Right click on the footprint/polygon in TOC
click data and then click on Export data.
20.
The dialog box open to change the output feature
class.
21.
Click on the output feature class to save the
shape file.(.shp format).
22.
Change the name
of theExport_output.better to save in a new folder because it contain other
files i.e,shx,dbf ,prj etc.and click on Yes.the new shape file made.
And now remove the existing
file in the TOC and add the new made shape file in ArcMap.
23.
Click on the
color and select no color the new footprin look like
