Esri a prominent GIS company, published a whitepaper in late 2014 that commented on the growing use of 3D tools in GIS applications. The paper states, “Just a few years ago, it was sufficient to have your city charted in only two dimensions However, the reality is the world exists in three dimensions.

Today’s urban planners are now challenged to map, understand, and analyze their cities in three dimensions. Many 3D applications, such as building shadowing or storm water runoff studies, are becoming more common.”
